2013 Reininger Syrah,  Walla Walla Valley—92 points
“A blend of Pepper Bridge and Seven Hills vineyard fruit co fermented with Viognier, this wine opens with aromas of mountain blueberries, wild flowers, orange peel and pomegranate. The flavors are perfumed and polished, with floral and bluefruit notes lingering on the finish. It brings a lovely sense of texture. “—Sean Sullivan

2013 Reininger Malbec Walla Walla Valley, Pepper Bridge Vineyard—19+/20 points | $52:

Deep purplish ruby colored, this wine emits intoxicating aromas of wild blackberries, blueberries and black currants with scents of crushed roses, mulberry, cigar box, violets and oriental incense. The flavors mirror the aromatics with lavish black and blue fruits that are imbued with licorice, bittersweet chocolate, campfire coffee, and gravel and loess minerals. The saturation continues on the back with sensations of macerated berries, roasted walnuts, toffee, dried currants, mocha and graphite, all marching on into a lingering, ripe, savory (coriander, clove, sage) fine grained tannin finish. The aromatics and depth give it a plus.

2013 Reininger Carménère, Walla Walla Valley, Seven Hills Vineyard—19+/20 points | $54:

This is a striking rendition of the “lost grape” of Bordeaux. It exhibits an inky crimson color and perfumed aromas of black cherries, Damson plums, black currants, attar of rose, mulberry, sweet tobacco, violets and oriental incense. On the palate, the dark fruit flavors are penetrating yet silky, intermixed with dark chocolate, French roast and silty South Valley minerals. The saturation continues on the back with sensations of semi dried cherries, roasted nuts, plum preserves and mocha, all driving onward into a thick, ripe sweet-dry tannin finish. The depth and complexity give it a plus.

2013 Helix by Reininger “SoRho” Red Wine, Wahluke Slope, Stone Tree Vineyard—19/20 points | $40:

Deep ruby colored, this blend of Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Grenache shows a deep ruby color and a rich nose of boysenberries, pomegranates, currants, cranberries, rosebuds, sweet tobacco, brambles and spiced incense. The flavors mirror the aromatics with deliciously supple red fruits that are intermingled with licorice, cocoa, sassafras tea and Wahluke scorched earth. The chewy textured back reveals gently pressed berries, crème de cassis, dried pomegranate seeds and touches of kidskin and lanolin (“legs”) followed by a savory, Provençal herb dusted finish.

Wine & Spirits “Year’s Best US Syrahs,” | February 2016

Reininger 2012 Walla Walla Valley Syrah—91 points | $47: From Seven Hills and Pepper Bridge fruit, this syrah is dark and burly. With air, scents of black plum compote and Christmas spice emerge. The flavors plump up, too, with a blackberry plushness leavened by a fine, black minerality. It has the stuff to age; then serve with lamb.
